Status of Biodiversity and Possible Areas of Cooperation on Science and Technology and Biodiversity among the ASEAN Countries

Overview

Southeast Asia has very rich biodiversity but there is lots of issues such as deforestation, climate change, invasive alien species, illegal wildlife trade, generic erosion, etc.
The ASEAN have committed to implement its roadmap towards ONE ASEAN Community to sustainably manage its natural resources and biodiversity and undertake flagship programmes which protect key ecosystems.
Most of the progress has been on the conservation.

These includes:

  • Transboundary Initiatives
  • The ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme
  • ASEAN-Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN)
  • Corridor Initiative in the Greater Mekong Areas (GMS)
  • The Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), etc.

There are potential areas of cooperation on Science and Technology and Biodiversity among the ASEAN countries. Interlinking biodiversity research and support to policy initiative will be more enhanced through the partnership.
