DATE / TIME : 2020•10•08

On 23 February 2020, UNU-IAS, Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOEJ) and the Global Environmental Outreach Centre (GEOC) co-organised a workshop to share best practices for the simultaneous achievement of multiple SDGs locally in Japan. At the workshop, practitioners from 8 local organisations across Japan discussed lessons learned from their local activities to achieve the SDGs and challenges that such organisations faced when developing multi-stakeholder partnerships to achieve the goals. Localisation practices from Ishikawa, Kanazawa were shared by Cosmo Takagi (Research Associate, UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa) highlighting activities jointly conducted with the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Kanazawa University, and the private sector. He emphasised the importance of establishing a local evaluation framework and indicators in consultation with multiple stakeholders. The workshop also discussed the effective use of synergies and opportunities created by addressing multiple SDGs and ways to scale up local models to work on varying sustainable development challenges across Japan.
