Event Report: Sustainable Lifestyles for a Green Recovery Discussed by Experts at UN Weeks Webinar

On 6 October 2020, UNU-IAS, Sophia University, the Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOEJ) and the Global Environment Outreach Centre (GEOC) co-organised a webinar on the theme of “Sustainable Lifestyles for a Green Recovery: COVID-19 and the SDGs” as part of the Sophia University United Nations Weeks October 2020. The event highlighted individual and structural approaches for achieving a greener and more resilient society and addressed challenges for achieving transformative changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the opening remarks, Shinobu Yume Yamaguchi (Director, UNU-IAS) highlighted UNU-IAS contributions for build back better to achieve the SDGs through the support of evidence-based policymaking and promoting multi-stakeholder partnerships. Miki Sugimura (Vice-President, Sophia University) highlighted the possibilities that a new normal and learning challenges could contribute to social transformations to achieve the SDGs.

Suneetha Subramanian (Visiting Research Fellow, UNU-IAS) presented on the relevance of landscape approaches to green recovery from COVID-19. She stressed the importance of taking integrated, multi-stakeholder approaches in considering green recovery solutions from COVID-19. She also highlighted mainstreaming biodiversity and promoting landscape approaches as a key to build back better.

Further discussions focused on solutions towards a more sustainable and resilient society including mainstreaming biodiversity and promoting landscape approaches, promoting cooperation and collaboration amongst stakeholders, rethinking daily activities and general lifestyle and having a longer-term vision for such change.
