On 17 April 2015, the UNU Library is hosting the launch of the book Art, Culture and International Development: Humanizing Social Transformation by John Clammer (Routledge, 2015). This two-hour event will begin at 15:30.

This new book is the first ever to systematically explore the relationship between the arts (visual, film, literature, performance and design) and development. It examines the ways in which the arts can contribute to development (including poverty alleviation and the promotion of gender equality), and equally how they can lay the foundations for development alternatives and sustainable forms of culture, by stimulating imagination and creative capacities. the book argues not only for “culture and development”, but also for the development of culture, and explores how this approach can influence development policy and education in developed and developing countries.

The talk will include a presentation of the book’s approach and contents by the author, a commentary and discussion led by Dr. Naoko Kumagai (International University of Japan) and a display of artwork from developing regions collected by the author during fieldwork.

This Library Talk is open to the public and will be in English only; Japanese interpretation will not be provided. If you wish to attend the event, please contact the UNU Library by email (library@unu.edu), phone (03-5467-1359) or fax (03-5467-1360) by 4:00 PM on Thursday, 16 April 2015.
